Baking Soda Gets Rid of Dog Smells!

Stinky Labrador - How to get rid of dog smells naturally

Baking Soda is a wonder cleaner for doggy smells. And it’s not just that rich, bedding scent. It can help with all manner of labrador smells (sadly, not those revolting labrador butt smells….)

Pee Smell: Did your pet have an accident on the carpet? Pour some white vinegar right on to the spot, then sprinkle a thick layer of baking soda and let it do it’s magic! It’s best to leave it in to let it dry, covering it with a bowl or a plate keeps it safe from being walked on. Vacuum thoroughly when completely dry, and that is the end of the ugly, yellow spot on your carpet!

Rugs and Bedding: If you want to refresh your floor rugs, the couch or dog’s bedding, put two drops of your favorite essential oil into a jar of baking soda, shake well, then sprinkle liberally on all fabric surfaces and leave it in for a while before vacuuming.

Wet Dog Smell. Yes they love a swim but your car can sport that “wet dog smell” that lingers for ages. The night before you plan to vacuum your car, sprinkle baking soda across the areas that have been “wet dogged”. Close the windows and let the baking soda improve both the smells in the fabric, and in the air. Simply give it a good vacuum to lift the wet dog smell, and the copious amounts of dog hair you’ll find.

Smelly Fur: They’ve got thick coats which are prone to that oily smell. To substitute baking soda for dog shampoo, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with 1.5 cups of warm water. Avoid using this shampoo on your dog’s face, but soak it into the fur of your pet’s body, massage it in and let it sit for a minute. You may want to use a rubber brush to help release dead skin and hair. Then rinse out with water – adding few spoons of apple cider vinegar would make the coat extra shiny! If your labrador is prone to skin problems talk to your vet about this beforehand.

Preventing Hot Spots: Our Queensland dog rescue team know all about hot spots. Anywhere there are lots of bitey insects and beach days, there’s a perfect environment for hot spots. For treating insect stings and bites, make a thick paste from baking soda and water, apply to the spot and leave on for few minutes, then rinse clean. This will lessen the itch and prevent the dog from turning a bite into a drama.

Baking Soda Safety

Baking soda is a miracle ingredient for labrador owners. While it’ll help you get rid of dog smells naturally, you must be careful to avoid the dog eating it. First, it tastes horrible. But also, ingesting large quantities will make your dog sick. All of our rescue dogs receive the latest medical treatment from our many wonderful vets – but a little old fashioned baking soda goes a long way too!
