Melody’s Story
Melody was living a happy life in an idyllic Queensland town, with her family. When her toddler became seriously ill, Melody’s life changed dramatically. The family had to travel hours to a hospital everyday, leaving her home alone. Melody’s loneliness was heartbreaking for them, but they had a seriously ill baby too. Melody took it upon herself to take up a bar stool at the local pub. She learned to break out of the yard and hit the pub daily for cuddles and snacks. The family tried to keep her in the yard, but she was fretting. They did the right thing. They understood that it wasn’t fair on Melody to be home, lonely all day, and called Lab Rescue to surrender her. It was a very sad day for the family, and for Melody.

Her foster carer knew that Melody needed a family who would be home with her, who would spend plenty of time engaging her, and who would get her plenty of exercise so she wasn’t tempted to take herself off for adventures. Her foster carer gave this information to the Queensland matching team who found ten suitable families. But, one stood out!
Gary and Sharon are a retired couple who have always had labradors. They wanted a smaller lab (Melody was perfectly healthy at 23kgs – teeny tiny for a labrador) who would be a companion at home, and on their daily walks around the extensive local park. They wanted a social dog who would enjoy stopping to chat with their fellow dog loving friends along the way.

From the first day Melody joined the family, she felt like they were destined to be together. After a week, they said “It feels like she’s always been here”.
Labrador Rescue has been helping dogs for over a decade, and that means we know exactly how to make a perfect match. We have a network of over one hundred foster carers, and a team dedicated to matching the needs of the family with the needs of each dog. That means fewer failed adoption trials and more happy tales like Melody’s.
We always need volunteers and foster families to join our crew.
