Shy’s Journey from Rescue to Forever Home

We all know Shy at Labrador Rescue. She arrived completely shut down. Months and months of care couldn’t entice her to come out of her hiding spot. She was terrified. Until she met Dashing Dash, another Labrador Rescue dog, who gave her back her life.

Can You Help More Dogs Like Shy?

Shy’s Story

Everyone at Lab Rescue knows Shy. She was one of our trickiest cases. She came to us completely shut down. Terrified of everyone. Her story saddened all of us because even our most experienced foster carers couldn’t help her come out of her terrified shell. A few months back, we decided to switch her to a foster home that had an older, confident dog, to help her on her journey. Dash’s charm and lovely nature slowly started to rub off on Shy. While she was still terrified of people, she bonded with Dash so well, that he started to bring her out of her shell.

Well, fast forward a few months, and we’ve had an epic fail! In fostering, a fail means that the dog has bonded so beautifully, that the foster carer simply cannot give them up. It’s OK to fail. Failure is always an option!

Shy was a dog we worried would never be ready to go to a forever home. She was too shut down. No matter how much love and patience Lab Rescue gave her, she made little progress – too damaged by her previous life to embrace a new one.

Turns out, she needed a foster brother with a big heart and a wonky smile, to help her re-learn how human interaction can be.

So, she’ll be living her best life with Dash and his family.

It took more than a year for Shy to understand what love means. Lab Rescue funded Shy’s journey. We paid for her desexing, her monthly medications, and her life. Our volunteers contributed by paying for her food, and transport, and dedicated thousands of hours to helping her blossom into a happy dog.

And, Meet Her Best Mate Dash….

Shy's best friend Dash, also a Rescue Labrador

Dash was five years old when he found himself dumped at a pound. He had a quirky tilt to his head, and the pound suspected a brain tumor. Lab Rescue stepped in, and one of our specialist “high needs” carers took Dash on, determined to save his life.

Turns out, Dash has facial paralysis, not a tumor. Without more info from his former owner, we’ll never know how a young, otherwise healthy dog came to be partially paralysed.

Dash’s nerve damage means he wears a goofy smile and has a curious tilt to the head, which makes him, quite the charmer. He’s a bit of a celeb these days at the local Bunnings and shops.

The “disability” is now his “trademark” and everyone knows the Dashing Dash.

He’s 10 now, and full of personality and charm.

Labrador Rescue will always give these beautiful dogs every chance to live their best lives.
